American Forks campground to Packwood We had a pretty good sleep at the campground last night. We had oatmeal and coffee for breakfast and lots of snacks along the climb to Chinook Pass. There were lots of people at the summit, including what looked like some folks heading out on the Pacific Crest Trail. We were chatting with some ladies that had passed earlier that morning during our climb and were giving us kudos for making it to the summit. After they left, another couple walked up and introduced themselves: Natsuko and Jan, of Rene Herse fame. We chatted with them for a little while; they were taking their kids on a hike. What a small world. The descent to Packwood seemed to go on and on and on. The valley we were in was lush with a wide variety greens, all vibrant. There was sunshine and some puffy clouds - just beautiful. We got to the hotel a little early so we went next door for burgers (excellent). Between the burger joint next door and hotel the power in the whole town went out. We got cleaned up and went to the local market, which was still open and running on partial power from their generator, and picked up snacks and meals for camping tomorrow night and Sunday's ride. If all goes to plan, we will be just over the border into Oregon on Sunday night.
