Noticably more traffic on Woolsey road early in the morning now due to a data center construction(I assume, what else could it be). Probably only a half dozen cars passed me though, most of the workers were coming from Hampton and US41. This is about a mile away from the racetrack, which was sleepy when I went by around sunrise despite this being a race weekend. Surrounding it were hundreds of campers and semi trailers supporting the teams and the race, and a suprising amount of tents camped out in the grassy parking areas. I was glad I routed myself back home away from Woolsey/Hampton road.
I left as early as I reasonably could due to the heat index today. It was sticky the whole ride although barely tolerable before noon. I snapped pics of all the road signs within several new subdivisions which is much harder before sunrise. I got there just around the time it was light enough for this, and then afterwards tackled riding a bit on GA 155 which was not too bad traffic wise. I rode another couple of unplanned roads that are new, an industrial court that only serves two big Home Depot distribution centers that was mapped incorrectly, and then set about finishing the rest of the huge Heron Bay subdivision that is plopped right in the middle of nowhere(Luella). Also rode lots of extra roads connected to all this across the Spalding county line, including a neighborhood that has swallowed a nice gravel road. It has a water authority pump station thingie on it and it looks like they are closing it entirely if the sign on the gate facing the highway is to be believed. None of the streets have signs yet but everything was paved and no workers about so I went ahead and rode it all. After Heron Bay there is an adjoining gravel road with an old abandoned house very near the development that I finally explored today. Worth a look, it's collapsed but about half is still intact. Very interesting rock work including most of the house is perched precariously on random local rocks.
I stopped a bit early at the Dollar General in Luella rather than use the smaller gas station a bit further down route in Ringold. Felt really good here and was making pretty good progress despite the heat. Next I rode a couple dead ends off of Hampton/Locust Grove road which while somewhat busy wasn't terrible. Then probably one of the longest dead ends i've done in a long time, North Walker road which was nearly 3 miles long and was terrific riding. Brand new pavement and only a few scattered trailers on large lots. Here it decided to rain heavy for about 2 minutes and then back to blazing sun and dry as soon as I got back to Hampton/Locust Grove road.
I wound my way back west skirting Griffin to the north. There was a stiff headwind from the west and it was hard, I was tired and not drinking or eating enough. I stopped for the last time at a Dollar General on Manley road at US41. I got water but probably not enough and I just felt bleh the rest of the ride. I was too hot and didn't have much of an appetite which got me further behind plus I wasn't drinking enough of course. In addition to the very strong headwind. I diverted to taking Berhhard road and rolled home wishing I had started about 3 hours earlier. Just felt really hot outside and with the self inflicted wound of neglecting my nutrition and fluid intake. Very glad I didn't plan to do a 200+ miler today, this was enough.
