First ride of a 2-day out and back. Drove to St. Maries, ID and stayed the night at the Riverfront Suites. Got up the next morning for the ride to Avery, ID. Overcast skies as monsoonal moisture had spread north. The first 12 or so miles was along the more developed part of the byway. A few campgrounds, residential homes and lots of hay fields. Beyond Scott Park the river valley narrows. At mile 17 is a bridge to the Railroad Grade Rd, which becomes the Old Milwaukee gravel road and parallels the north side of the river. First rest stop (mile 24) was the turn for Calder. The actual settlement is about a mile north, across the St. Joe River. Evidently there is a school and rustic restaurant. Sprinkles began at this point. A few miles beyond Calder the sprinkles became light rain. Wet road conditions around mile 35. The rain ruined my plans of riding beyond Avery before checking into the B&B. Reached the B&B at 1030 am. Owners told me I could check in early, but around 1230 pm. Explored the little library and museum and the Milwaukiee rail car. Had a great sandwich at a fly and bait shop then checked into my room.
