This is the second time in a row that Peter has started a ride with a mechanical. Riding around in the lot before we got started he was hearing a noise that didn't sound good. He quickly figured out that he had broken a spoke.
There was a hiker in the lot that I've seen in the past. We asked if he had any tape or wire cutters and fortunately he had some duct tape that we used to secure the loose spoke.
We debated whether it was a good idea for Peter to do the ride. We talked to several people in the lot that said they'd ridden with a broken spoke for a while before repairing it so we decided to go for it.
It was holding until we got to the bottom of Spring Board, which is a steep and bumpy descent. I was already waiting, taking photos, and when Peter got there, he mentioned hearing some new noise. Another spoke had broken.
We were trying to decide what to do at that point and we figured the best thing for him to do was ride the climb up with us and take Gordon Mill Trail back to the car. It was lucky that he didn't backtrack as that would've been at least twice as far.
On the way up Gordon Mill, before we turned off to Crossover Trail, there was a big crunching sound and Peter couldn't pedal. The bit of the spoke that was still attached to the hub got jammed in his cassette. It took a little while but he got it out.
Suzanne and I continued on the trail but we decided to take Fir Trail back instead of the normal Methuselah to N. Leaf so we could get back hopefully around the same time as Peter. Looking at the map now, I wonder what it would've been like to take Methuselah back instead of Fir because we soon found out that Fir was crazy steep to climb back up. That trail shouldn't be legal. I've renamed it, "Fir F*cks Sake" trail.
We started off riding it and eventually had to hike. We had hiked a few pitches when we came to one where I said, "I think we can ride that?" We did ride it only to find many more pitches we needed to hike. Plenty of 20% pitches and the last one looked like it was 30%
One reason for taking Fir was to visit the Tafoni Sandstone Formation which was very cool to see. It's not a bike legal trail so there was more hiking leading me to think of a third alt ride title - Half Bike, Half Hike.
If it wasn't for Peter's broken spokes, we wouldn't have discovered the hiking "joy" of Fir Trail or visited the sandstone formation.
Those things aside, t was such a lovely ride. The weather was perfect and the trails were so fun and flowy.
