Harriet Shaw Weaver was born in Frodsham, Cheshire, September 1, 1876, to Frederic Poynton Weaver, a doctor, and Mary (née Wright) Weaver, a wealthy heiress. She was educated privately by a governess until 1894. Her parents denied her wish to go to university.
Harriet decided to become a social worker. After studying the economic basis social relations at the London School of Economics, she became involved in women's suffrage and joined the Women's Social and Political Union.
In 1911 she subscribed to The Freewoman: A Weekly Feminist Review, a radical periodical. When its proprietors withdrew their support, Weaver stepped in to save it from financial ruin. The magazine's literary editor, Ezra Pound, change the name to The Egoist. Weaver continued to support the periodical financially and became editor.
Pound brought in James Joyce as a contributor. Weaver was convinced of his genius and supported him, first by serialising A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in The Egoist in 1914. When Joyce could not find anyone to publish it as a book, Weaver set up the Egoist Press for this purpose at her own expense. Joyce's Ulysses was then serialised in The Egoist, but rejected by all the printers approached by Weaver, so she arranged for it to be printed abroad. Weaver and Joyce's relationship was strained by her reservations about his work that was to become Finnegans Wake. But on Joyce's death, Weaver paid for his funeral and acted as his executor.
In 1938, influenced by reading Marx's Das Kapital, Harriet joined the Communist Party. She died at her home near Saffron Walden on this date in 1961, aged 85, leaving her collection of literary material to the British Library and National Book League.

I've been very busy since arriving in Venice the day after the Mount Diablo Challenge. Today I finally had time for a short ride. I rode a route that's very familiar from my years living here. Not much has changed. Always interesting negotiating L.A. traffic!
Today's route had only modest climbs, but I can remember years ago struggling with hills that now are just not that hard. I had no trouble keeping a high cadence on all the climbs today. That really helps.
