Rode with Phil today who is out of shape due to several weeks without riding. Today downloading the route didn't crash the RWGPS app and it worked perfectly for the first 15 miles of the ride. At that point it went silent for the remainder of the ride. We had a great lunch at the Mish but ate inside because the deck was full when we arrived. As normal with Phil, we had a technical discussion during the big climb. The topic was carbon nanotube transistors. Phis had just interviewed with a start-up that wants to commercialize this technology. My contribution was pointing that the first several papers on carbon nanotube transistors by Jan Schon at Bell Labs were later determined to be fraudulent; Bell labs fired Schon and the papers were all retracted. His doctoral degree was also revoked for "dishonorable conduct". I didn't overlap with Schon at Bell labs but did overlap with some of his co-authors including Bertram Batlogg who was working on high temperature cuprate superconductors when I left Bell labs.
