With the tail end of Storm Brendan still depositing a fair bit of precipitation, few were expected to turn out for the long ride on National Pothole Day. In fact, six of the many intrepid Loiterers intent on ignoring the wind and rain and assembled in Market Square, wearing capes, overshoes and sundry other waterproofs, chose to follow me though some of the muddiest, waterlogged and pothole-ridden highways of South Bucks and Dacorum. Tim, Bernie, John Macmillan, Alan, Chris and Mark Robson followed me to the newly extended Deli in Chalfont St Giles for coffee where Iain joined us. With the rain having eased off, some opted to cast aside their waterproofs for the second leg of the ride to our lunch stop at Blackwells in Chipperfield. As always, good food and friendly service made for an enjoyable lunch, consumed whilst watching yet another torrential downpour. The rain prompted Bernie to put his waterproofs back on and we resumed the ride just as it stopped and the sun appeared just as ordered! Rousebarn Lane gets the prize for having the most potholes per metre, except for the final stretch that was simply under water; paddleboards might have been better than bikes. By the time we reached the Ebury Way, where we all began to head for home in different directions, all bikes, and riders, were carrying a lot of mud, but a good day out with fine Chilterns scenery – and we mostly dodged the rain.
