I rode this masterfully crafted CRW club route, which creates a scenic tunnel of quiet rural roads by careful routing. Along the 55 mile section starting at the Bedford VA hospital, the route goes through a minimum of commercially developed areas, and instead favors farms, horse farms, orchards, and the like. For a rider who is following the arrows painted discreetly on the road, or following the written cues, or following a GPS, an alternate world is created, a world without strip malls or convenience stores. This is great for me as tourist, until I want to buy some lunch. I am building enough familiarity with Metro West routes that I am becoming acquainted with what we could call wormholes -- points of easy passage between the scenic-ride tunnel and the world of commerce. In Littleton today I was at about mile 45, had a hankering for a sandwich, and somehow unerringly remembered that a block off route was a passably good convenience store for food and water. There must be a special memory circuit for remembering food stops.
