Sunday. Dave Taylor's long ride. In tow are Chris Kinsey, John Owen, Iain MacDonald, Colin Acreman, John Hare and myself. Things are off to a bad start as Chris's bike has a nasty crack in the crossbar where it meets the seat post.
Anyway, Chris decides to risk the journey, and with his structurally compromised bike creaking away we head off through the Chalfonts to the littlest one, and Ozzy's Cafe for elevenses.
Near Amersham, John Hare heads along the main road while the rest of us wend our way down the valley into Chesham. After a route through a nice little park, we head up hill towards Asheridge and Cholesbury. Over the Ridgeway we descend into Tring and the Kings Head for lunch.
Afterwards we head for the Grand Union Canal. The tow path is festooned with fishermen with huge rods. Don't know whether the competition was about fish caught or rod size, but they certainly had the equipment. The giant rods were not the only hazards threatening to turn the unwary Loiterer "sub-aqua"; there were prams, and small dogs to avoid. We continue either along the canal or near it, past Berkhamsted and Kings Langley. Near Hunton Bridge Colin has a slow puncture but manages not to speed it up. Finally we reach our refreshment stop at Cassiobury Park and to a man plump for an ice cream each.
Heading south we turn on to the Ebury Way and eventually climb up to Harefield. Along Breakspear Road, John, Chris and Iain leave us for Ruislip. At Ickenham, Colin and Dave leave for their respective homes, and I continue past Uxbridge Common and the Uxbridge Road home. Another inspired Dave Taylor ride with excellent weather to boot.
Regards Bernie G.
