Wednesday. My ride. Followers are: John MacMillan, Jim Swan, Sandra Gladwin, Andy Forrester, and Colin Acreman. We set off along the Slough Road following a well pedalled route past Pinewood to our elevenses at Eats and Treats, Farnham Common. There we are joined by Denise Forth in "civvies".
Leaving Denise and Sandra, the famous five head onwards into an increasing headwind and some showers, past Burnham, Maidenhead and Bray, to White Waltham. It is here, lashed by rain that we discover that we are Jimless. I head back over a mile to find Jim sheltering behind a wall with his bike upside down. He is in the middle of fixing a broken chain. Heading back to join the others I meet them coming the other way, so we all gather around Jim, offering sympathy if not shelter. Job done with the rain still belting down we take the short cut through Altmore, to our lunch stop at The Cricketers Arms, Littlewick Green. As we munch lunch, I am grateful of the protective qualities of my new jacket, that has kept me dry in spite of everything.
As we finish, the skies clear and the sun comes out. We retrace our steps back to Bray and Eton Wick, with more heavy showers. We stop at Sainsbury's Slough for refreshments, John and Colin leave us here. As it's getting late, Andy needs to get back to West Drayton station, so Jim leads the way through the back streets of Slough and Richings Park to get there. An unusual route, most of it made up "on the fly".
