Nice for first 10km or so with gentle tail breeze. Then very frustrating passing through Bow Hill. Flukey thermal breezes every which way.
After that plenty of excitement leading to the boat sliding up on the rocks below one of those famous yellow cliffs!
Before that, some great high speed sailing and tacking into a strong sea-breeze. But on one of the tacks the jib sheet slipped out of my hand and the jib flapped like crazy, causing the sheet to get all tangled around the large bow mooring cleat.
Only solution was to go forward and untangle the mess. Did that, but before I could get back to cockpit and get the boat sailing properly again - into the reeds opposite that cliff.
Finally worked a way to extract boat from reeds. First tried using the paddle and finally the motor. Paddle could not cope with strong breeze. And sails still up too!
Well, I learned how quickly a boat can sail itself across river in a strong wind, in the short time it took to cut the motor and lift it up.
Next thing I see us hurtling towards the ugly black rocks at the base of the cliff! Was not sure if I had that jib all sorted so decided not to risk tacking into the breeze in case I could not get the nose past the eye of the wind.
So tried a jibe instead (turning down wind). Bugger too late. Broadsided the rocks, but luckily only a glancing as the bottom of the boat slid across them.
Boat coming to rest only a couple of meters before an over hanging tree! Very lucky! If the mast and rigging hit that at speed, and we were moving, a lot of damage to the mast. And side stays tangled up in the branches! I would still be there now!
I was in the process of setting up two long mooring ropes tied together, to moor the boat to another tree a about thirty metres up-wind. Just as a precaution. Did not know how secure the boat was on those rocks, and did not want the wind to blow it that extra two metres to entanglement and bent mast. Then I noticed the boat rocking a little. It was not jammed solid! My lucky day! Everything going right at the moment.
So next job, bring down the sails. Collect that safety line making sure I kept tension. Pull boat backwards along the bottom of cliff, making sure I kept it just deep enough not to hit any more rocks, but not so deep that I accidently put my next step into deep water. Came very close a couple of times!
Finally far enough up-wind from that tree. About 15 metres. Then had to push bow of boat out away from the cliff, as much as possible, while not losing footing on the moss covered rocks. Well did not get very far with that and I felt my feet sliding! Big nose dive with the little footing remaining and landed on my belly on side of boat..
Had to act fast now! Wind blowing us straight back towards the tree and still close to the rocks. Still a bit of main sail not furled up, but boom on wrong side. It would sail tge boat straight back on to the rocks! And no steerage because rudder still up out of the water.
So first swung boom over to starboard side. Half a second used up.Then leaning out over back to push rudder right down and lock it down. On to the tiller. Missed tree by a couple of meters! Oh my lucky day!
Then just hoped I could start that motor and it would chug me along up-wind, towards Mannum, beyond that 600m or 800m of cliff and rocks, before sputtering to a stop. As it has been doing over last three or four days. Only good for about ten minutes at a time!
Well it did stop, about 100m past the end of the cliff. Again, luck going my way! I tried sailing in the heavy wind just with the jib. All that accomplished was tacking back and forward across the river. and being blown back down wind. Too risky to hoist the main, having to go onto the foredeck, in strong wind, and rudder just locked in centre position. Decided I had had enough adventure for one day lol.
So here I am, moored in the reeds opposite that cliff, four lines attached to clumps of reeds, and an ugly big tree stump poking out if the water, in line with the boat, just 10m down-wind!
Hope I still have a bit of good luck left in the bank!
