It was warm from the start of the ride but luckily stayed pleasant until we got back into the valley... where it felt like an oven.
Rode down to Sanborn to do John Nicholas Trail and Bay Area Ridge Trail. It starts off with a steep road climb to get to a steep gravel climb to get to JNT. WOOF!
First time climbing JNT and I gotta say, I preferred descending it. BART was way more technical in sections than I remembered it. A lot of rocks, baby heads, rock gardens and roots. I managed to descend a really rocky technical descent that I normally would of walked but since I was leading I sort of felt like I should keep going. And it somehow didn't feel sketchy at all. :)
Along Skyline, on the way back to Page Mill, a cyclist stepped out of the bushes and stood right in the middle of the road as we were descending towards him. A couple seconds later a woman (dressed normally) stepped out too and I could see they were talking to each other. As we got closer, I saw skid marks in the road arcing into the opposite lane and back into ours and then a copper colored car nose first in the bushes they had just come from. The driver was still inside and seemed okay. No idea what happened but everyone seemed fine.
We did some Monte Bello trails on the way back. It looks like they put down new gravel and smoothed the trail out. It was also my first time at Foothill Park which has some great views.
The icing on the cake would've been a burger at Alpine Inn but sadly we were there too early. We had to settle for a delicious burrito at Lulu's instead.
I'm really not loving the return on Alameda de las Pulgas. Way more traffic than Canada, there's the headwind and it's mainly uphill.
The ride was so fun and epic, it felt like at a minimum high fives were in order but virtual high fives from a distance was the best we could hope for.
