Gorgeous sunny, cool and clear day with ENE winds that increased during the ride. Solid group with Wally, Rob, Tim, Carrie, Monica, Tracy G (new member from Elmhurst Club), Gene, Dave S (Bike Rack sessions) and Angie. Standard route up to Gilberts rest stop (Oasis gas station - excellent). Headed NW onto Highland, Damisch, Big Timber and Powers (personal favorite). Unfortunately, high traffic volume and low/no shoulder made traversing Kreutzer and Galligan roads a bit dicey. Likewise, Binnie was a very nice, scenic stretch but the traffic and lack of shoulder made a few folks uncomfortable. Crossing IL 72 at Sleepy Hollow Road was problematic as we could not get a light signal amongst the very heavy and fast traffic. Sleepy Hollow Road (suspect pavement) and Beau Brummel Roads were very quiet, and the short, punchy hill on Hilltop was an HRM buster. Crossed Randall with the intent to eat at Burnt Toast, but the wait was too long. Instead, ate outside at Rookies where they provided plenty of seating. On return, Paul Wolff Campground had a nice paved road throughway, which allowed for a shortcut to Big Timber. Skipped the planned second rest stop in Gilberts. Nesler and Bowes were in good condition, but the traffic was heavy. Muirhead and Dittman were much quieter return legs. Everyone practiced excellent social distancing and we never stretched too far apart. Legs felt good, but tired. Rehydration at Riverland’s Brewing afterwards with Rob.
