This is my Parallels24 ride. The total time shows a bit over 24 hours because I started my Polar (for a photo-op) before I actually left and forgot to stop it immediately in the finish. For real time and distance (529,9km) see the picture of my Garmin etrex.
On Saturday 20 June I rode my bike. The whole day. From midnight to midnight. I participated in #parallels24 organized by @apidura. The goal was to ride as far as possible in 24h. The trick is that the distance is not the kilometers you ride, but how far you go “as the crow flies”. I checked couple of options but decided to go with a familiar route from Ylivieska to Eastern Hesinki. 530km of cycling gets you 430km from the start. I took a train to Ylivieska and headed out at midnight.
Three points from the ride:
1. I love riding at night. At the latitude of Ylivieska the sun barely sets. Everything is nice, calm and quiet. When I got closer to Helsinki, it started to get darker but the streets were pretty much empty. I rode through one busy suburb on the road at 36 kmph average speed (point 1,5: I'm really happy with my sprint to the finish). That’s something you can’t do during the day.
2. Lack of sleep really gets you. I headed out at midnight when usually I would be going to bed. In the morning, around 6-8am I was drowsy. I took two 15 minutes naps at bus stops. Even though I wasn’t as sleepy after the morning, pedaling didn’t feel as good as usual.
3. Slow and steady gets you ready. What matters the most is the time you spend moving, not how fast you move. Two weeks ago at #HSH600 the I-don’t-even-know-how-many-times (someone said 7) PBP finisher AP showed us youngsters how it’s done. He was one of the last ones to check in at the half way point, but was the first at the goal line. I had only one proper eat and resupply stop at 316km and a quick one at 385km but other than those and the two naps I had only 5-10min breaks. Less than 3,5h stopped time meant that I was able to get to Vuosaari in time even though I wasn’t moving as fast as normally.
I’m really happy with the result. 530km is my longest 24h ride. According to google maps the finish was 431 km from the start. You can find my ride from @ridewithgps (link in bio). After the ride I was more exhausted that what I have ever been after a ride, but today I've been a hungrier version of my normal. It was both type 1 and 2 fun, but I'm happy I did it.
