Wanted to do a ridiculous ride today, and this is what happened. Didn't quite feel up to riding Olallie afterwards: my hands were beat. Not that the rest of me was in top shape or anything. Tried to take it a little easy at Tiger (total time there, ~2 hours 10 minutes), to save something for later: didn't hammer up Master Link, and was a bit cautious both times on OTG. But apparently I still set a new PR on Fully Rigid+Joy Ride? OTG felt pretty good otherwise, but I need to be careful on a few of the rock rolls: I whacked my chainring twice. There were not as many people out at Tiger as I was expecting: the parking lot had spaces at 10am when I arrived, and still had some at 1pm when I got out. No mountain from the viewpoint at the top. Had a sandwich, and a kouign amann from Celine and headed for Raging. Again, parking was not as full as I'd expected. Gave some advice to a guy at the map board, about where to take his kids to give them a sample of MTB trails (Raging is not good for beginners). Then about two minutes up Upward Mobility, I realized I'd forgotten to hang up my Discover Pass! So rode back to the car to fix that: didn't want a ticket! Climbing up definitely felt slow and painful: I could feel the 2 hours at Tiger. Saw only a handful of people on the way up, and a few at the clearing (still now mountain). Decided not to ride No Service: I was pretty tired, and if there weren't a lot of people out, I'd rather not risk it. Instead, took my first ride on CCDH. It's immediately on the right down the first short bit of Return Policy: I asked directions to a group that was having lunch, and they said "right here!" It's definitely a "spicy blue" trail. Not as hard as No Service, but felt pretty steep in places. The top part is very soft, so failure isn't bad (I slid out on one steep corner, and just went "pfft" into the loam). Took a break at the big rock (did the ride around: it's doable, but not when I'm tired) to rest my feet: they were tired from all the standing on the descents. the bottom part of CCDH is fast and pumpy and I caught quite a bit of air. Followed the group who had given me directions at the top up the climbing trail to reconnect with the main Raging area. Start of that climb is some steep switchbacks, and I felt the burn. Snacked on some salmonberries a few times along the way, and then ground back up from Dash to Poppin' Tops. Another snack break there, and two hikers had been watching a furry critter break off bits of bramble and pull them down the hill. I got out my camera and long lens and was ready to take a photo just as a group of four loud bikers showed up with their dog, and the creature scurried off. Looked it up, and it was a Mountain Beaver. Poppin' and Flow State were great as always, and I intentionally caught air on the final rock at the culvert at the exit of Flow State (only did it once before, and that was by accident). My hands were hurting, so I decided to eat the last pastry (monkey bread!) and go home, without riding Olallie. I think my legs could have survived a ride to the first clearing there, but it would have been painful, and the calluses on my hands would have hurt a lot. But hey, >50km and 5500' of climbing, some fun descents, and feeling quite stable on the bike. Not too shabby.
