Met Bob and Sonny at Old Woodside Store for a Dad's Luncheonette ride. Right from the start of the ride it was already pretty warm. Saw Doug roll passed just as I got there and it looked like we were going to roll out together but Bob thought he had a flat.
We took it nice and easy up Kings. Descending Tunitas, there were a lot of people climbing already. I think I saw Merissa climbing up. Half way down I caught up to a car and motorcycle. I was far enough ahead of the guys that I decided to stop and wait to take photos rather than get stuck behind the vehicles.
After the guys went by I quickly caught back up to Sonny and passed him. Then Bob AND the vehicles. I passed Bob and the motorcycle and caught back up to the car. They were close enough to the turnoff that I decided not to pass them too.
When we got to the top of Lobitos the temperature was much cooler - the wind was actually cold. Out at the coast I was worried that the lunch stop would be cold.
Climbing Higgins, Bob wasn't feeling it and it was the first signs that today was going to be a hard day for him.
There was a long line when we got to Dad's because they took a short break - not sure for what. It was excellent as always.
On the way back, just as we got onto Lobitos Creek, we caught up to three older riders - a guy and two women - who we would sort of ride with or near all the way to Woodside. I passed them since we seemed to be going faster but I guess Bob didn't really want to. As it started to go up Sonny and I were passed by the guy.
I was like, "You're not Bob!" Sonny and I continued to take it easy, waiting for Bob to catch up. At one point we were wondering do we wait or chase that guy. I looked back and saw the women and passed Bob so I thought, time to chase down the guy.
We caught and passed him pretty easily then after getting to the topped, turned around to go back for Bob.
We caught up to the group once again just before the descent down to Tunitas. We passed them and were riding along until the steeps when we dropped Bob.
This young guy, not in cycling gear caught up to us, who I thought might be Bob but nope. Couldn't have him passing us so we picked up the pace.
The guy from the group of three eventually caught up to us and Sonny and I climbed up most of the way with him. Half way up the flatter section, Sonny was started to get antsy and looked like he wanted to pass the guy. Right at that moment when we started pass the guy, he said, "Whoa! Maybe I need to wait for Bob."
We laughed and quickly accelerated away, riding much faster than before. At one point Sonny really put the hammer down and I just decided to draft him. Shortly before the top, we slowed down again. Sonny was saying he didn't know where the top was and sometimes went to early. I was thinking, we're about to reach the final sprint. I was going to say, we're hear but just started the sprint instead. :)
We went back down for Bob and took it easy on the way back up - no second sprint.
I thought we would stop at the top but Bob just rolled on over to start going down Kings. I followed, I don't think Sonny was quite ready. I caught and passed Bob at the trail crossing because some guy was doing a U-turn and was just stopped in front of us.
I had a great descent, passed a car and the two women from the group of three. I eventually caught up to some cars near the bottom. At the bottom, I briefly thought about stopping to wait for the guys but decided to keep going.
As I'm bombing along towards Old Woodside Store, I see this silver Chevy Impala come flying towards the intersection from Tripp Rd. He didn't look like he was going to stop. I looked at the car like, what are you doing and as I passed I could hear the guy yell, even with the wind in my ear and even though I was a good distance passed, "CYCLISTS GET OFF THE ROAD!!!"
I was like what is this guys problem and I was bracing for him to turn right and head my way but he didn't. Then a short while later he passed me and flipped me off and just held his finger.
He was stopped, third car back at Kings and Woodside. As I approached, a CHP (and a Sheriff) passed on Woodside heading west. Man I wish that was like 30s later. When I approached the car, I took a photo of his license plate and passed him since he was stuck. I could hear him yell, "WHY ARE YOU TAKING A PHOTO OF ME?!?!?!?" The guy was enraged and drove to the right, around the cars waiting to turn to come after me.
I crossed to the the other side of Woodside Rd but with him behind me, I really didn't know where to go so I turn CW back across the road to Kings and followed me, stopped across the road blocking the westbound lane of Woodside, yelling out the window at me. I had no idea why he was so triggered. I can only assume he had some run in with cyclists on Tripp.
He said something about taking a photo of me which I think he tried to do with his phone. I brought my camera up again and he immediately tore off going the wrong way and driving on the shoulder since there was a car waiting that he had blocked.
I found out later, when the two women showed up that the guy had buzzed them and they gave him the finger so maybe that added to it. Bob and Sonny also showed up right around that time but everyone missed the whole thing.
After filling water, we parted ways. I had such a strong headwind going back on Canada and I my legs were feeling crampy. It was also way hotter than before. My Garmin said 39C/102F!!!
Every time a car passed, I was wondering if I was going to run into that guy again but I got home safely.
Screw you guys, I'm going back to gravel!!!
