Today was the Broward Tour de Cure ride to benefit the American Diabetes Association. I signed up for the 100 mi ride, along with about 12 other club members. About 100 plus rider started the 100 mi ride at 7am.
The weather was clear at the start, but the wind out of the SW was growing. A front was scheduled to move through about 11 am, bringing rain and stronger winds out of the NW.
We started with a police escort, which is nice since we didn't have to stop for any lights or stop signs. We rode pretty hard for the first 30+ mi, but according to our club ride plan we pulled into the first rest stop. A small group and the police escort went on.
We waited on some of our group that had dropped off, and we started again. Now with no escort and a smaller group the headwind was really felt. We pretty much had a head wind for the next 30 mi until we got to the 60 mi rest stop. We thought we might catch a break as we would be heading north, but while we were at the rest stop the front passed. The temp dropped 15 or 20 deg in minutes, and the wind came out of the NW. And then the rain started. We decided to abort the rest of the planned route and head back. Unfortunately we now had a head wind most of the rest of the way home. And several of the group were tired and cramping so we dropped the speed way back.
We hung together petty well, but with about 3 mi to go, I took off and headed home for a hot shower.
It could have been worse. We really didn't get much rain at all. Just enough to make the roads wet and miserable.
