First time riding at these two parks and I was immediately loving Calero County Park. It was fun with the cows in the fields but the trails are super pretty and in great condition.
About 5 miles in, I was loving Calero so much, I was already looking forward to returning even before finishing the whole ride.
One thing I didn't realize, some of the trails I routed were now one-way due to COVID precautions and I routed them going the wrong way.
I didn't see the alt trail that paralleled Longwall Canyon Trail and we ended up doing it the wrong way. Luckily no one else was on it, just a couple of hikers. When we got to the bottom of it and started down Mayfair Ranch, a MTBer told us we were going the wrong way and warned us about the rangers so we turned around and stayed on Longwall Canyon all the way to the bottom. I figured we were doing a loop anyway and we could just do it in the other direction.
We were hoping to get water at the parking lot down at the bottom but there wasn't any. This is were things started to go bad for Kathryn. She got more and more dehydrated and heat exhausted.
And up Catamount Trail is where we encountered a super steep climb that reminded me of Old Growth Classic (which we would've been racing today if it wasn't for the fires and COVID). I almost got off my bike because I was just tired of concentrating on finding the best line and not spinning my tires but when I saw how close I was to the top, I just finished riding it.
At the top, Kathryn was out of water and really struggling with the heat so I just gave her the rest of mine.
After this point I was worried about Kathryn. Things can go really badly really quickly when you get dehydrated. It also didn't look like we'd be doing the rest of the ride over at Almaden Quicksilver.
On the way back, I noticed there weren't many riders anymore. I think we rode passed two. In the morning there were tons of riders and the parking lot was nearly full. I suspected most people got an early start to avoid the heat.
It was mostly downhill back to the car and what do you know - the lot was nearly empty. :) We rehydrated and ate. Kathryn was definitely in no condition to do Alamaden Quicksilver so I did the rest of the ride by myself.
I questioned whether that was a good idea given how hot it was now and also how we managed to run out of water in only 25 miles of riding.
Luckily a lot of it was shaded but anytime I was in the sun it was really hot.
Almaden Quicksilver just starts with a long, featureless climb - no views really. I almost wrote the park off but the views at the top were pretty nice.
It's mostly fire road though. They were in good condition but it was also just not as scenic as Calero. Not sure I need to ride there again.
Made it back just as the cows were heading home themselves!
