Wednesday 22nd July 2015.
A large group sets off from Uxbridge under Sandra Gladwin's leadership. I counted three Johns, two Steves, one Margaret, Stuart, Iain, Angela, Alex, Brian, Cliff and a Bernie. Apologies to anyone I may have missed.
Sandra asks me to be the back marker. My look of bemusement/trepidation, prompts Sandra to issue what she believes are useful directions. "We are going up Chandlers Hill, left at the two mini roundabouts, then turning right past Flowerland." Except for the reference to the roundabouts, I'm none the wiser. Sticking closely to the rest of the pack seems the best option, and if the worst comes to the worst, I have most riders phone numbers at hand. So off we go through Iver Heath and Langley Park to our first refreshment stop at Windsor Garden Cafe. We have lost John Hare by this time to the culinary attractions of the Top Twenty Cafe, one of his favourite erstwhile work time haunts.
After drinks, we continue through the Great Park. Sandra pulls up outside the Post Office Cafe, to show us where we would have stopped had our numbers been smaller. Onward then past Virginia Water, and Wentworth golf course, although thankfully unlike my last cycling visit, a major tournament was not in progress. With a darkening sky we arrive at our lunch stop, The Rose and Crown at Ascot. Margaret, Angela and I go to the pub next door, The Duke of Edinburgh. We arrive just short of the lunch order deadline at 2pm. We eat outside, but the deluge is not long coming after we have finished, and before we can rejoin the group at the other pub.
We all shelter until the worst is over, then start our return leg. Turns out to be a sucker's gap as the rain gets heavier for a time. By Fifield, the weather gets better and the quick change artists divest their protective leggings in favour of bare flesh. Nearing Dorney Court, Margaret suggests another venue for tea, so we all follow her along route 4 to Salt Hill cafe. In my case and a few others it's icecream (the queue is shorter at the serving hatch). From here the group begins to disperse as we head for Stoke Green and Iver Heath, to our various homes. One person I left out was Denise Forth who joined at some point and left again to collect her kids from school. A memorable ride, thanks to Sandra and Margaret.
All the best Bernie G.
