We were going to do a century down to Gilroy but Bob promised a top secret route between Saratoga to Los Gatos. It ended up being a lot more climbing and it felt like it took an extra hour longer than usual to get to LG.
I guess it was worth it for the #roadbikesoffroad through El Sereno Preserve and the view from the Overlook. On the way down, Bob stopped suddenly on the trail and I just avoided him. He yelled, "Mountain lion!" and up the trail I saw what looked like a juvenile running up the trail followed by another one that came down off the side of the hill.
We waited for while so they could clear the area. When we got going again, right around the corner, there they were! Two bobcats, not mountain lions. :)
It was cold in the morning but pretty hot by the time we got to Almaden. We had lunch before tackling Calero and Uvas. As we were rolling out, I saw a donut shop that I never noticed before. I wanted to get a donut but Bob didn't feel like it and said we could get it on the way back. It was clear that after El Sereno, we didn't have time to go all the way down to Gilroy.
40 miles in, at the start of Uvas, my legs were already feeling tired... and that was with a tailwind.
As we circled back, with the headwind, I wasn't sure about making it back. I wasn't tired but my legs were. :) I was really looking forward to the donut.
By the time we made it back, the donut shop was closed. :( I had to settle for a Starbucks donut which is usually not bad but I got the last one and it was dry and crumbly and generally not great. The Frappuccino really hit the spot. Between the donut, frap, and some Advil, my legs felt way better for the rest of the ride home.
