One of those rides from hell, or nearly so. My Bulls AM 4 is out of commission waiting for a new motor. So I converted my Haibike SDURO from bike-packing back to trail riding. I've been wanting to explore Quigley Canyon for a while and finally got to it. Based on Strava Heat, I knew that the trail leading up to the start (of the good part) of Coyote Loop didn't get much heat. I found out why. The maximum grade my computer recorded before I threw in the towel was 37%. Yeah. Forget that. It's one-way downhill and probably dicey at that. So another trail was tried. Steeper than I can keep traction at times, but worse even, my derailleur would not stay in 2nd gear. Bent tooth. Works fine on low loads but can't handle torque. Probably time for a new, expensive SRAM NX cassette on this bike. Another issue – I'm going to say that I love my Bulls AM 4. I can climb steeper stuff on it even with higher gearing than the Haibike. It's the geometry I guess. With the Haibike, even in super-low gear (32 front / 50 rear), in full boost I just couldn't keep the front tire on the ground on this really steep stuff. Much of the alternate ride to get up to the start of Coyote Loop was boring, dumb, uninspiring utility roads on oil property. I don't have time for that. I did finally get a run down Coyote. I do like that trail but it's not very long. I found another trail coming off of what's called City Loop. It appears to be a fairly recent rider-made trail that isn't on maps (yet).
