This ride begins from the Baker Store off highway 26 outside Elsie. The ride starts with a mile downhill, 0.30 miles on highway 26. Need to be extra careful as what little shoulder exists was covered in small gravel, likely from sanding during the winter storm two weeks ago. Also be careful crossing highway 26 to highway 103. Once on highway 103, it is 9 miles to the junction of highway 202. Highway 103 is narrow and has no shoulder, but traffic is light. It is a scenic 9 miles, with a few short rollers and crosses the Nehalem River several times. At the highway 202 junction, going left takes the rider to the Jewell Elk Wildlife Refuge. This route goes right, toward Mist. Birkenfeld is 12.1 miles away. There is one moderate hill about six miles out. Highway 202 is a beautiful section. There is a store in Birkenfeld called "The Birk". Three miles beyond Birkenfeld is Mist. However, about a mile past Birkenfeld is a turn-off to Fishhawk Reservoir. These are two nice options.
