This route starts from Tillamook Bay Community College. Head west out of town for about 3 miles and then go right onto Bayocean Rd. This is the alternative route to Cape Meares and has much less traffic. Go left onto Cape Meares Loop (it's also called Bayshore Drive). There are signs saying "No vehicles beyond the gate", but bikes are ok. There is a 1.25 mile climb to the gate, followed by another short .25 mile pitch then approximately 0.50 mile slight incline to the top barricade. There is one very short gravel section past the gate.
At the top, go left to stay on Bayshore Drive and enjoy a descent to Short Beach, followed by a 0.75 mile climb and a long descent into Oceanside. The route then goes left on highway 131 for another lengthy climb and a descent into Netarts. Continue through Netarts and go right on Netarts Bay Drive. This comes out at Whiskey Creek Road. Ride this 5 miles to the Cape Lookout State Park entrance. An option is to ride into the park for a rest stop before tackling the 2.75 mile climb just past the park. The climb is a fairly constant 8-10% grade. Once complete, there is a 3 to 3.5 mile downhill to the Sandlake Rd. intersection. Stay straight for the final big climb of 1.4 miles. Be careful on Sandlake Rd. It is grooved pavement all the way to highway 101. There is a decent bike shoulder, but it is cluttered with pine cones, needles, twigs and scattered loose gravel.
Finally, ride 101 north for nearly 8 miles to Tillamook River Road. This is a left turn on a corner. Follow Tillamook River Road 3 miles to 12th street. Cross highway 101 and go one block north to 11th. Follow this to Miller Ave. Go right and then veer left onto 12th. Ride past the high school to Marolf Loop Rd and back to the college.
