What a day. First time ascending Page Mill and it surly set the tone of the ride. Tough love. We hit it early and beat most traffic up the hill. After a bathroom break at the Montebello parking lot we met a friend at Skyline and began our decent down Alpine Road. A quiet drop into the valley with fast sections and twisting turns through creek valleys and Redwoods. Spot some big trees next the road, they are spectacular. We turned left towards Pescadero and enjoyed more forest covered road. Break for coffee and a snack in town before clearing 2/3 hills on stage road. San Gregorio has a wonderful market right off highway 84. The only time you encounter highway 1 is a for a short but very fast section which loses the shoulder at the base as you cross a bridge. Watch for traffic, take the lane, make it safe. Tunitas is a slow burn that, while beautiful, is a real test of patience and persistance. Catch a breath in the lot once you get to Skyline. Prep for the Kings decent. We saw a lot of gravel spots on the way down, made the decent much more sketchy so we took it slow. Cruise into Woodside.
