Wednesday 9th September 2015. A quick preamble to the ride story. Rode to Watford from home thinking that I was meeting a certain Scottish train driver at Morrisons. I later found out that he was in the land of nod having accomplished a twelve mile hike the previous day.
Our leader, Dave Brown, and Alan Potter were already outside Watford tube station when I arrived, and we were soon joined by Sandra Gladwin and Angela Kemps. There was a slight unintended diversion before we left Watford proper, but Dave consulted his notes, I consulted my GPS, and between us we found the route to Abbots Langley and beyond. Past Hemel Hempstead we descended a flight of steps, accomplished by some with more elegance than others, to the Nickey Line, which for those of you that don't know, like me, is a disused railway track that runs between Harpenden and Hemel Hemstead.
After refreshments at the quaint little bicycle cafe, The Hub at Redbourn, we continue along the track, but get stuck in the mud around Harpenden. This is always bad news for my bike with it's close fitting mudguards. My trusty ex- dinner knife takes care of the worst of the mire, and soon we are back on tarmac. After another unintended diversion and subsequent consultation of notes, we weave our way to our lunch stop at the Elephant and Castle at Amwell. Lovely pub and lovely grub, just a shame about the wasps.
Our return leg takes us back through St Albans and a tea stop at Verulam Park. At Bedmond, our route converges with the outward one, until we reach Watford station again around 5pm. Some catch trains, others take cars, and the odd lunatic keeps on pedalling.
