My options for getting the vaccine as soon as I could(most were all booked up) were pretty much limited to:
Option 1 A shopping mall in Douglas county. Ick. just no
Option 2 Somewhere in College Park near the airport Not the end of the world, doable. Hard pass though.
Option 3 Thomaston at a beautiful Methodist church, one that i've already ridden right by on another long ride. Sold!
So I did have to cut short a stay up in the mountains and it makes the logistics a bit more difficult for starting my next long trip, a ride north-south through Georgia on the east side, but I need to go ahead and get the vaccine and have to wait another 3 weeks to get the 2nd dose, so It will work out pretty good, I should be back home around that time.
It was a really nice day for this, a bit windy, but not too hot and not too cold, and the rain held off and it was mercifully cloudy most of the day. I was a tiny bit worried I had left too late to do the meandering way around Thomaston before time for my appointment because of the stiff headwind, but not to worry, I made it there with 30 minutes to spare and as it turned out, they really couldn't have cared less what your appointment time was, as long as you had a scanny thing for them. I sat outside for a few minutes then went inside. Had I known it was less strict about the time i'd have just walked right in. But it was fine. I neglected to bring a lock because I had thought that perhaps it would be done in the parking lot, my wife and parents both said they never got out of their cars, but this took place in a large fellowship hall of the church. There was a police officer right in front where I left my bike directing people to the door, so I didn't worry about my bike at all.
Everyone was pretty impressed that I had ridden there from Peachtree City. They were all very nice. Soon enough after my wait period was over and I felt no different, I left and got going. I planned a wandering route that took me on many new roads to me and it was wonderful. Most were completely deserted. I was very impressed with Willingham Spring, which is right by the road(same name), and it looks like it's ok to walk around it, there weren't any signs and someone is maintaining the grass path to and from the road, there are pretty nice rock steps leading down to the little pool where the spring bubbles up, which is about the size of a normal backyard pool. It was extremely clear and cold water. This would be a great destination on a hot day, if the spring is running of course. I have no idea how reliable it is. Right behind the spring is Bull Trail mountain, which rises more than 400 feet above the spring.
