Just as I was almost ready to get going from my campsite this morning, a guy in camouflage with a rifle over his shoulder rolled up on a mountain bike. I was a tad afraid he was going to point out that I wasn't supposed to camp here or something but he simply asked if I had seen or heard any turkeys. Of course. He's out here hunting, doesn't care where I camped. I told him what I knew, hadn't heard or seen any but in my wandering around the night before I saw fresh tracks near the creek. We wished each other a good ride and parted ways. My route had me continuing up the hill the way he left and it was ridiculously steep. after this climb topped out my route faded away to an abandoned track, where I spotted the hunter again. he advised me on routes and said that the way I came in is the only way through unfortunately. I took his word and was grateful because in my stubbornness I know I would have hacked my way through untill I had wasted all my energy and would have wasted even more time getting out. So I simply went back to Braswell Mountain road and at a quick glance at the surrounding roads found a quite nice back road alternative to get back on route without using the highway.
I got a bit more food at a Dollar General in a tiny town, and continued on down a deserted, narrow, curvy and hilly paved road, typical of a lot of the back roads here. I would only see a vehicle every few minutes. But I had one big F250 pass me pretty close, in this deserted stretch... He wasn't going fast enough to kill but that mirror would have put me on the ground. I began to feel a little bit unwanted here. I didn't see another vehicle for awhile after that. Soon though I got on a slightly busier road and had a box truck run me off the road as be passed me into an oncoming car. I got slightly off because it didn't seem as he was going to slow down or get over and I'm glad I did.
Beginning to hate Bartow county at this point. I haven't had a close call in longer than I can remember and here I had had two inside of an hour. Tried to stay positive and keep on, it was just a coincidence.
Anyway by chance soon after I rode by what is known as Sosebee cycling park. It was a community maintained parking area for cyclists complete with cold well water, porta potties , changing rooms covered picnic tables and a fire pit and chairs. I stopped here for awhile to get out of the heat and chatted with a nice cyclist after he finished his ride, while he ate a lunch on the picnic table next to me. He was very nice and thought I was pretty crazy when I told him what all I was up to.
After leaving the little park I rode into Pine Log. It's a very large WMA with a little mountain range and nice streams and mountain bike trails that are pretty good I hear. I looked it up and there isn't an official place for camping but it's so huge I figured I'd find something easily enough somewhere over the big climb through the property off the main gravel road. Well as I rounded one of the first bends in the road I saw a black cat, and was really confused, then I saw two big tents set up nearby in the woods just off the road by a creek. There were people sitting in camp chairs and they had a dog as well as the cat. I laughed to myself that this answered my question as to whether anyone cared If I camp here and soon after found a glorious spot in a hollow so deep it blocks out the sun nicely as I sit here with my feet in the creek cooling off.
