Day 5 Inverness to Boat of Garten
Blue skies and a barmy 11°, what more could you ask for, on our final leg of the epic journey. Getting out of Inverness was pretty straightforward as we simply followed the cycling signs for Sustrans 1 & 7, well marked and a mixture of excellent paths and small back roads.
There were quite a few highlights to this 35 mile last leg, not least of all were the number of viaducts that we saw and of course visiting the Clava Cairns of the Nairn valley. This was also where the Sustrans 1 & 7 went their different ways as we continued on Sustrans 7, heading South. This also started the steady climb into the highlands and Cairngorm National Park, 2,200 feet of climb, although in the main it didn’t feel too bad. I’m guessing that the non-eBike cyclists that we left in our wake would disagree🥵
Gravel tracks were few and far between, and those we came across were in good condition, but in the main it was tarmac. We made a welcome stop at Tomatin, not the distillery, rather it was the family friendly Strathdearn centre, well worth a visit for good coffee and fantastic, freshly cooked pastries 🤪. This was also a popular spot for fellow cyclist, so it was great to meet and chat with other likeminded souls.
The cycle continued on following the old A9 road, which is now used for cyclists and walkers. It continued uphill until Slochd Summit at 1,315 feet, from then on it was mostly downhill, giving us great views of the Cairngorm mountains and a few more viaducts.
We reached Boat of Garten mid afternoon, off loaded our bikes (after a beer at the Boat Country Inn of course), then set off for a wee cycle along the Speyside Way (Sustrans 7) to Aviemore. What a fabulous track this is through very pretty forest and heather, with the back drop of the still snow-covered Cairnngorms. It was great fun especially as we just put the eBikes in ‘Turbo mode’ and hacked along, surprising some cyclists when we were coming up the hills as fast as they were coming down 😁. Time for another beer in Aviemore then back onto the track for a fast dash back, in time for our dinner slot at the Boat Inn and so, as they say, that was that. The end of our fantastic journey down the East Highland Way and back up the Great Glen Way, we would recommend it to everyone, especially on eBikes! 💪
