My recommendations for riding it
It took me around 4 hours to complete the loop last year. Prepare for at least that amount of time on the bike with many riders taking around 5-6 hours when riding at a more sensible pace.
Navigation-I use my Garmin 1030 Plus to navigate the loop. I load the ride onto the Garmin and then follow the prompts. This is challenging but the only way to get around the loop and also you can tell the Garmin to navigate you back to the start should you get tired out there. Save $100 if you pick up one from the shop.
Adjust your ride by planning ahead- If you are not up for the full loopt than consider an alternative start location to shorten the loop as a good option. Don't get sucked into the "all or nothing" mindset. Do what you are capable of, have fun and think about how you would like to improve for next time.
Equipment I used was my "standard" gravel set up which is the Niner MCR with 42mm wide tires and fairly low gearing. I wouldn't consider the loop to be extremely hilly but there are a few hard ones in there but a lot of the ride is "draggy" meaning the surface is soft.
Route description-typical local "gravel" meaning anything from pavement to you wish you had a mountain bike. You will have to walk sections of this ride!
Food wise I carried 3 bottles with me to drink and a bunch(like maybe 8) GU gels. Based on the information I have the ride requires about 2500 calories to complete so make sure to get breakfast in too.
Pacing-this should be steady and start slow to make sure you complete the ride without being exhausted.

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
