In the 2 ½ years since I took up off-road riding, I've been playing a fool's game of Russian Roulette by not having a spare rear derailleur hanger in my saddle bag. I've told myself numerous times, when traversing the nastiest, gnarly trail, that I really needed to get one in case I snapped the one on my bike. Well, today the loaded chamber spun in front of the hammer. At first I thought I had kicked up a stick, but when I looked down and saw the chain dangling, I still wasn't aware of the true damage done. After dismounting, I saw the one thing you never want to see in the woods, your rear derailleur hanging by the cable. Luckily for me, I was only a little over a mile away from the main parking lot in the Great Swamp and had to call my wife to come pick me up. I just ordered two hangers from Stedman's, one to replace the broken one and a spare, so when this happens again, I won't have to do a walk of shame. I'll be able to swap out quickly and continue trekking onward.
