We made a slow start on day 2. We had to wait for the hardware store to open at 9am, so we left our camping site at about 8am and rode about a mile back into town. We had breakfast at a diner next to the hardware store. When the store opened we were able to get a replacement screw for Maya’s cleat at a cost of 45 cents. (Not wanting the extra weigh or jangling of change in my pocket I put 55 cents into a donation jar for some local animal charity.) We were probably moving down the road at 9:20 or so. Our slow pace was made that much slower by the series of climbs we encountered between miles 10 and 28. We stopped for lunch (i.e., 2nd breakfast because that was all there was on the menu) at Port Henry about 4 hours after setting off from the hardware store and only 29 miles down the road. Instead of taking our originally planned route over the lake on the ferry at Fort Ticonderoga, which would like take us another 4 to 5 hours at our current pace, we opted to take a short cut over the Crown Point bridge. This allowed us ample time for a swim in the lake and hot showers at the state park campground. Dinner was potato chips and dip and a can of beef stew. After a few hands of Monopoly Deal we crawled into our tent just as it was getting dark. We were not sure how things were going to go the next day as thunderstorms were in the forecast.
