Last night was pleasantly cool and pretty quiet so I slept well. Today it seemed like a good time to try to make some miles since I had a favorable wind, mostly pavement and much flatter terrain ahead of me.
But I had camped with only a liter and a half of water last night and so couldn't cook anything, not that I really had the energy anyway. So I was short on water to start but knew I would go by a little town with a store and possibly a church. I found the church first and it had a working faucet. I took the opportunity to hand wash my sunsleeves, and socks. I had been worrying that I got poison ivy on them so I figured better safe than sorry, and they could use a wash anyway. I carry a tiny bottle of detergent. I hung them out in the wind underneath my bungee strap to dry.
Thus filled with water I could bypass the store and wait for a DG. After descending off the mountain I emerged into a maze of endless cornfields. Around a bend I saw a lone squash that had fallen off of someone's vehicle. Its companion was already squished, err I mean squashed... So I picked the good one up and tucked it underneath my bungee strap. I was thinking how I could chop it up and cook some rice with it. I hadn't gone 2 miles and came across a church, which had a food donation box near the road. I decided it was serendipity and put the squash in the box along with the other items, a can of green beans and two small bags of rice.
I made good time and by 10 AM I had crossed over I-24 and found a nice church with a picnic table, water, and a plug for charging. So I cooked a broccoli cheddar meal and took my time. There was almost no traffic but I could still hear the drone of interstate traffic half a mile away.
I passed a couple more stores because I still had plenty of food. I finally found some gravel and it led to an old bridge that was probably closed to cars but only had mounds of dirt as barriers and no sign. I crossed to the other side and found most of the road washed away into the Elk River. There was enough room to ride around but with about a 30 foot dropoff. After this the roadbed was overgrown but manageable, just knee high grass. Soon I arrived at a homemade barrier of chunks of old brick chimney, odd. Rode a bit more and found a strange house right on the river, in a weird state of "renovation". Like someone started but then gave up soon after. Lots of random old wood stacked beside the road nearby. I kept riding and arrived at a gate which had a sign facing me that said "Camping 20$ per site" I hadn't passed any sort of campground, it was all pasture beside the road. I went around the gate and the other side of the sign had hand written: "campground closed". Weird. Then it dumped out to pavement.
Later on I headed down a road that warned me the bridge was out. So I rode on anyway. Road turned into gravel, and straight away I hear a sound and suddenly I'm getting sprayed with sealant. I was doing 30+mph so it took a second to stop. I feared the worst but by the time I found the leak it had mostly sealed. Small hole right in the middle of the tread. I put a plug in, pumped it up and got going. I guess it was just a sharp rock? Gravel is slate here which can be sharp I guess.
Up till the puncture I felt pretty good. But afterwards it was like a switch was flipped. Suddenly my stomach hurt, and I didn't feel like drinking the boiling hot water I had, or eating anything. Thankfully I arrived soon at today's DG. I didn't feel like a soda. So I grabbed a milk and got some sliced cheese.
I felt a bit better after eating and drinking some but was still tired. I still didn't have a plan for camping anywhere and I was really kinda done. But it was nothing but farms and residential all over. Went by one church in the middle of evening vacation bible school. Most others said on the sign they held Wednesday evening service. Went by a Mormon church that was actually having a new roof put on. I passed an almost completed Dollar General building which would have been probably ok to camp behind but there were work trucks still there. So I pushed on, slower and I just was getting tired. Farm after farm. Pastures. Then I passed an overgrown house. It was clearly abandoned. I circled back. No signs. I checked it out. House was open but wrecked inside. Front porch was way too exposed to the road. Side one had poison ivy everywhere. Side 2 was the grass driveway, really exposed. The back carport had a truck. But there was enough room to squeeze a tent on the concrete. So that's what I did. Not bad if you ask me. Road isn't too busy. I have frogs and cattle seranading me.
