I was awakened last night a couple of times by critters poking around the house next to me and so I slept in a bit this morning. I felt a lot better that yesterday evening. My stomach had settled and I had a voracious hunger once again. Didn't have enough water to cook a meal so ate a breakfast of chocolate and Nature Valley bars and went on the prowl for a church yet again.
The route early on was pretty flat and on some really fast pavement. I crossed the Elk river again on an old bridge that's now closed to cars. I found a church across the river in Elkton that had a faucet. Then I turned onto a state highway heading west and I was really flying. Great pavement, another favorable wind and I was feeling terrific now that I was fully hydrated. I crested a small hill and a fox crossed the road in front of me.
The roads progressively became more narrow and less traveled and then the hollows began. This was to be the theme of the rest of the day. I would climb up a super steep hill, and go right back down. Most were overall not that steep on average but it seemed to be a rule that if you began a climb, you could bet you'd see 12% at least briefly, somewhere. And the descents were challenging as well. Looking at the route profile it would seem that these short hills were no big deal but many would have pretty sharp bends seemingly out of nowhere. I relied on my GPS to provide me with a bit of a preview of the curves to come, like playing a racing game. With the extra weight of all my gear I needed the extra time to brake before a switchback because they were so steep. But I do enjoy riding up and down these sorts of hills and so I was actually having fun, so maybe I'm getting used to this a bit more.
Sometimes on long rides through trashy areas when bored, I take a sort of informal survey of what sorts of brands are represented amongst the littered cans and bottles in all the ditches everywhere. In addition to the normal Coke, Bud Light, Mountain Dew bottles, there was a curious different one that is even more prevalent here. Sun Drop. I've been keeping an eye out for a chilled one in a store but didn't see one until I stopped in at the Piggly Wiggly in Collinwood today. I also got a slice of watermelon to get some fruit in me finally. The Sun Drop tasted basically like Mello Yellow/Mountain Dew. I tend to avoid these since they have so much caffeine. For a bottle it was the same as about three cans of Coke, 106mg. I drank two thirds of it, late in the day before I thought about this and looked at the label. Oh well. I'm saving the other third for breakfast in the morning.
I pressed on from Collinwood intending to camp at a church about 10 miles away. However I went by a suitable one 2 miles or so closer. I'm in the very back of the cemetery far away from graves and where I'm not visible from the road due to the slope of the hill. So nice to camp on grass again.
