I was right about it being a long night last night. Soon after I finished writing my report and posting it, the campground manager, Amber, walked up to the folks next door and told them that generators aren't allowed. While she was doing so, the loud drunkards on my other side were yelling and screaming and fighting with each other, throwing things, etc. I heard several punches amidst all the yelling. Amber walked over to them and really made sure they had to shut up and behave or she would evict them or call the cops. I stood by, close but still in my campsite in case she needed help. They still had trouble shutting up but eventually they got the message after she raised her voice even more. I thanked her graciously and we hoped that was that. Amber told me if they keep on to let her know. I thanked her again and she went back to her cabin.
They stayed quiet for a little while but one guy had a loud voice so I heard everything despite trying to tune it all out. They started arguing again and the loud guy decided he was going to take his stuff and his truck and leave the other guy there. The other guy proceeded to wander around the campground aimlessly. Loud guy had several really loud phone conversations with his love interest, and while she tried to calm him down he just kept cracking beer after beer. At one point he was threatening to stab the other guy if he came back over. This went on for awhile. Eventually he starts talking (yelling) about his friend Bryan who was on his way. I hoped this person would be the voice of reason but things didn't improve. The loud guy started really drinking and could.barely form a coherent sentence after 30 or 40 minutes. At one point the friend Bryan gets in the back of his truck, grabs a battery powered sawsall and shouts something to the effect of "we can hide a lot of bodies with this" this was not 50 feet away from me. That was the last straw. It was around midnight at this point and so I went and found Amber and she agreed we had to call the cops. We never said anything to them, we just stood well back and waited. Loud guy got even more hammered. The cops were taking forever but it was a long and winding gravel road up to the campground. Amber said they had never had to deal with anything like this before.
At one point they stumble out from their area and Bryan leads the two drunks out down the campground road. They could barely walk. They went all the way down to the overlook. It was really sinister the way Bryan had a floodlight pointed on them and they were walking like zombies. And yelling out all sorts of dumb stuff. Their brains had turned to mush. I had basically given up on the cops. After a little while the drunkards came back, resumed drinking and still speaking as if they had an audience in a gymnasium and the PA system was down.
I finally had really had enough and started packing up my things to move, probably down off the mountain way out of earshot. Right then the first cop car arrived. Eventually 4 more showed up. After checking out the drunkards they asked us what happened. We told them and eventually they agreed with us that they needed to go ASAP. All their stuff and the truck would be left behind. We felt pretty relieved and wrote up, on paper, what we witnessed and our info for the police records. Pretty surreal experience. All things considered it went pretty quickly. Everyone left around 2am and finally I could lay down. Campground was dead silent finally. I slept soundly till 6:30, until the people who had the generator woke up, to go to a bike race, on gravel that was going on nearby. Oh well.
I met some great folks last night too, Wes and Maya are local cyclists who graciously listened to my ramblings about my trip, my life, and the events that transpired last night. It was great meeting you both.
I headed out down the steep gravel road into pouring rain first thing. I just pushed on. But it was over in about 10 minutes and the rest of the day I battled dust and sun although the temperature was wonderful.
Somehow I missed the store in the town of Mountainburg. I thought I would go right by one so I pushed on. But by the time I realized that I had for sure missed it I had already climbed a big hill and didn't want to backtrack. So no problem, next store is in 50 miles, big deal. Except the miles were super hard today. Lots of steep up and down and basically all of it on gravel. Most was pretty hard packed but some of the steepest pitches today were pretty loose.
I left the campground with 4 liters of water which seemed a bit excessive but I didn't see any creeks for well over 4 hours. I eventually crossed lee creek, and the only way down to it was via a very busy public access road and parking lot. It was packed with people coming to enjoy a swim in the creek or lay out on the huge rock jutting out into the water. It was a pretty big creek but I was out of water and didn't want to be empty another 4 hours.
I got really tired after this and I really just wanted a nap. But I pushed on. The only traffic on the road were atvs and the small buggy 4x4 vehicles. Lots of them. Big clouds of dust fouled the air whenever a convoy of several would pass, blaring music and spewing fumes and engine noise everywhere. What a way to enjoy the wilderness.
Just before the steepest climb of the day, I met a nice local who happened to be driving by. She asked if I needed anything and I said I was fine even though I had basically no food but meals. She offered an apple and I took it and thanked her. She's hoping to hike the Colorado trail this summer. The apple was still cold from the grocery store. Amazing because it seemed we were so far from anywhere on that gravel road. I ate it right away. It was delicious.
Soon I began to think I could indeed make it to Lincoln today. I even found a church for water just outside town. Eventually after grabbing food at DG I found some ball fields. I pitched my tent behind one of the dugouts.. it's really quiet here. So far no loud drunks.
