Rain rolled into Lincoln this morning around 5am. The high wind woke me up so I battened down the hatches. I needed some extra sleep anyway so I slept till 8. The rain had stopped by that time so I packed up and left.
It wasn't long before I ran into some rain through. I crossed the state line into Oklahoma with zero fanfare. Wouldn't have known if it weren't for the Garmin.
First rain didn't last long but then another came. By this time I was in the town of Westview and I ducked under a covered area beside an old unused church. Almost as soon as I did it cleared up. I rode over to the little library and stood outside the building while I used their free wifi to download some new podcasts. On the way out of town I got some food at their lovely little independent grocery store. Real peanut butter again.
Soon after I found myself on a steep downhill and as usual I was careful to avoid the bigger rocks and stay in the two track to hopefully avoid sharp rocks. Suddenly my rear tire almost bottomed out even though I didn't hit a big rock or anything. I stopped and took a look. Turned out I had picked up a nail in my sidewall of all places, right next to my other punture from Tennessee. And strangely it was not far from the bead. It took two tries to get a plug to stay, but thankfully it held from then on and I didn't have to put any more air in it the rest of the day. I just left it hanging out of the sidewall since it wasn't hitting the chainstay.
A couple of times today I was in la la land and got about a mile off course. So I added some extra miles. Skies eventually cleared enough for the sun to be out for most of the day. So I wasn't in any rush. I stopped at a small convenience store just off route that I wasn't expecting for a soda and chips which really hit the spot. Today was just so great. Gravel was superb(although it got kinda gnarly towards the end of the day, on balance it was fast rolling), basically no cars, tailwind, and I raced a storm late in the day and won. I intended to go into the town of Salina and perhaps camp in a park there. But just before town I passed a nice cemetery that had a covered area so I pulled in. The storm caught up a few minutes later. I'm exposed to a minor highway but I don't think I care today. Only had a half a liter of water when I got here. Thankfully after a while it really rained hard and I got a decent amount of rainwater, plenty for a eating a little snack before bed and getting me through the night.
