Started out the morning in good spirits. No rain and I got going fairly early.
But once I started rolling on the road and looked westward to Alva, it became apparent that not only was heavy rain approaching, I wasn't going to make it to town before I ran into it. So I just got wet. I pulled into a Jehovah's witness church porch to wait out the worst of it. And they had a faucet.
By the time I rode into town the rain cleared and I went and got a couple necessities from the Walmart. I rode over to the park on the edge of town and charged some things while I lubed the bike and fixed a couple things on the bike a bit better. By the time I decided to get going rain had begun again. So I waited a bit longer for the heavy part to pass. Finally I got going with light rain and decided to at least take a look at the TAT route. I consulted the county DOT road maps and they indicated the route should be on gravel. What they also told me is the only westbound paved road was US 64. The crumbled pavement ran out and I was supposed to turn onto a rutted out, muddy dirt road. I took one look and turned right around for the highway. It had also begun to rain pretty hard by this point. I worked my way through town to the highway again and headed west.
At least I had a tailwind today. I was thankful for that. First big storm came a few miles from Alva. It was thundering and lightning pretty close and I was badly exposed. I turned north on a paved road away from the storm. Soon I passed a huge tractor at the edge of a muddy field. I decided to try the door. Unlocked. So it came to pass that I waited out a storm inside a tractor.
After a few minutes the rain slacked off so I got back going again. The road alternated between huge shoulder, small shoulder, or no shoulder. Not too much traffic. But 65mph speed limit. And surprisingly hilly and it passed through terrific scenery. So usually when I heard a semi coming behind I would just get off briefly once he got close.
The rain eventually stopped and I started to kinda dry out. I had a raging tailwind so very little to complain about. But I was already bummed about
leaving the TAT for the highway. And so when it began to rain again, and it was a bit cooler, I was just kinda feeling miserable. I had scoped out the ballfield location in town and I headed straight for the dugout of one. Kinda disappointed with the day. Radar showed more rain possibly all day. Not really many other nearby towns to continue on to. So I ended the day here. I thought that Oklahoma would be hot and dry, couldn't be more wrong.
