Today started on some fantastic undulating gravel roads, staying up at altitude, before we popped out onto a tarmac road to take us the last 5km up and over the Puerto de La Ragua, on the A-337 mountain road, that crosses the Sierra Nevada from South to North. Roadies at heart… this was a gorgeous piece of Spanish tarmac. A winding ‘Alpine’ style climb that we shared with a whole bunch of other cyclists. We started the descent on the tarmac, and it was such an amazing descent that we decided to continue down on the road. However, if you want to get off-road again, then at 53.8km turn right onto a gravel descent track.


Once down and out of the Sierra Nevada there is a bit of transition section to get across to the next mountains. This is a windy flat plain with little to see so it’s easiest to stay on the tarmac to get the section done.


Next, we climbed up into the Sierra de Baza mountains. The higher up we cycled the more beautiful the mountains became. We made it to a small, but brand new, Refugio at 2000m to spend the night. The Refugio has stunning views out of its door, but note there is no water.
