I asked Bob if he wanted to ride but I didn't hear back so I was going to do the Planet of the Apes/Purisima Creek gravel loop and meet up with some Fatcakers in the morning for the first part of the ride (who were going to do the road version).
Well, I woke up in the middle of the night to find that the power was out and it wasn't scheduled to be back up until the meetup time. So I just went back to bed and set a conservative alarm on my phone.
When I got up, luckily the power was back and Bob replied saying he wanted to ride. Coincidentally, we made it to the FCC meetup point for the original time.
The weather was supposed to be nice at the coast and scorching hot inland. At the start, it was sunny and the temperature was perfect.
As we got to the north end of Sawyer Camp Trail, you could see the fog/clouds hanging on top of the ridge. Then on Skyline, climbing up to Sharp Park, we rode into a bank of fog.
I didn't bring any extra layers, expecting it to be hot. I contemplated changing the plan, worried it would be freezing, since it was already chilly, on the other side.
Instead we went anyway. Descending Sharp Park, I felt like I had made a very bad decision. Once we were at the bottom, it was chilly but not too bad.
What was bad? I only finished one water bottle from the start to Dad's. Not good. We got there about 5 mins. before it opened and there were already a couple people in line ahead of us. By the time they took our order, there was a pretty big line behind us.
The sun was starting to poke out as we arrived and luckily it was out while we were eating.
The rest of the ride was a weird mix of sometimes it was crazy hot and then the wind would gust and it would be really chilly all of sudden... at least until we got to Tunitas. It just got hotter and hotter as we climbed and then inland, it got hotter still.
Descending Kings was a mix of trying not to heat up my carbon clinchers too much (they were actually fine) and loving how much grip there was having heat in the tires.
Bob and I parted ways after getting more water at Roberts. I had to deal with a pretty strong headwind the whole way back. The only silver lining is it helped to keep temps cooler than they could've been.
