Today was a lot. We’d identified Pinedale as a Sunday rest day but hadn’t committed to getting all the way there on Saturday night, but I think all of us were privately gunning for it. This meant pulling off our biggest mileage day yet with what turned out to be beautiful but fairly difficult terrain. We had a bunch of chunky gravel climbing in the morning up to gorgeous high meadows around Union Pass (including a real-life cowboy and cowdog sighting). The gravel never quite got good and we had underestimated our food needs and were all feeling a bit under-calorie’d, but trail angels from a Central Wyoming College support truck supplied clutch bananas and fruit snacks which really made our day. The descent was very bumpy and dusty with ATV traffic, and our views of the Wind River Range were cloaked in wildfire smoke (apparently from as far away as the PNW). We had 30 more long miles into town on a stretch of highway shoulder, but we powered through on the dregs of our snack supplies and arrived in time for dinner. This rest day feels well-earned!
