Our ride started out with the Yellow Branch Line rail trail- we’d heard it was incredibly soft and sandy, and the map even offers an alternate route. We decided to go for it anyway, and found it to be quite fun (the downhill grade probably helped!) The path winds south overlooking the Warm River canyon and ends at a riverside campground that made a nice break spot for some leftover pizza. We climbed out on pavement through forest that opened up into farm country on the back side of the Tetons. The road changed to gravel again as we rolled towards the state line. Once again, trail luck was on our side as we passed a Sprinter van with two friendly day cyclists who generously supplied us with ice, Coke, and camp beers for later- thanks guys! We crossed the Wyoming border and the gravel got pretty chunky and steep, but eventually the grade turned down towards Grass Lake reservoir where we took another break to rinse off the dust and sweat. From here we rolled onto Grand Teton National Park’s Rockefeller Parkway (which sounds fancy, but was just a gravel road with classy vintage signs). Eight stellar campsites line the road and of course they were all taken- we were in national park territory now and the volume of traffic jumped considerably. All the NPS campgrounds were full and don’t have hiker/biker reserve sites- boooo! We kept going to a USFS campground just outside the park and found a very rad adventure couple that was willing to share their site with us- thanks Sydney and David! We enjoyed swapping stories around the picnic table for a few hours before turning in to our tents.
