After the exhaustion of yesterday it took a bit more time to go to sleep, at least by the standards of the trip. 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds. I slept deeply and other than 2 off road vehicles going by at 5:19, it was all quiet.
I descended the rest of the canyon into town, and while there were lots more campsites, they all had people nearby, so I was glad of my choice.
In town I found a faucet behind the tiny post office. I'm the backyard next door was a huge apricot tree loaded with ripe fruit. It dangled over into the post office lot. I ate a bunch and carried some out. Wish I'd taken more, they were excellent.
I rode to the only store in town. It was a sort of service station that also sold gas and snacks. While the gas was open all the time, the store was closed Sundays. Thankfully they had vending machines but they only took dollar bills. I got a can and a bottle of Cherry Coke, would have bought more but as it was I had to use the quarter I found on Imogene. I had plenty of cash but no more dollar bills.
So I rode out with a bit more than 8 liters, less than I wanted. I pressed on. The climbs were more gradual and the roads were decent. But eventually I crossed i-15, climbed a steep hill and the road opened up to a land devoid of plants. Mountains on the horizon but flat plains everywhere. I did have a gradual downhill for a long while which was nice. And I was once again on a proper gravel road which made for faster riding.
As there were few trees and rare shade, I stopped at a highway crossing for a break under a large tree. While sitting there I got to see a Union Pacific train go by 50 feet away.
I got going and it was pretty hot by this point, and I had a tailwind as well which was nice but it made it feel even hotter as I had no air blowing over me. Eventually my gradual downhill flipped abs became a gradual uphill. I really struggled with riding through such a barren landscape. Where to stop and take a break? No shade or anything really around to prop the bike on. So I would just stop randomly and lay the bike in the road. I saved my coke for a time when I was feeling down, and even at 115 degrees or whatever it was, it tasted good, better than the even hotter water in my bottles. I think I needed the extra sodium more than anything.
As I neared the top of the little pass it became a bit steeper and trees appeared again and the surrounding mountains were so strikingly beautiful they ripped me out of my fatigued malaise for a bit. The Wah Wah Mountains.
After the pleasant descent and a bit of a climb I made a turn to the north and my tailwind became a headwind. With a gradual uphill. It was here that was the hardest part of the day for me. It was still very hot, and a smoky haze was blowing in with my headwind. I just had to plug away at it one pedalstroke at a time. Eventually I turned west and picked up a tailwind again. Then I knew for sure I would make Garrison. Thankfully, the church, about the only thing there, had water. I was down to less than 1 liter after starting from Kanosh with more than 8. I rode on over to the state line and went down the line road a bit and am camping here. A healthy distance from America's Loneliest Highway.
