Well rested and charged up I left Green River early, just after daybreak. The only road west out of town is I-70, so I rode on that for a couple miles to get to US 6 and my route. Traffic was light in the early morning hours. And with the huge shoulder it felt way safer than US 191, despite the 80mph speed limit. I may have jammed out to Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots. At a reasonable volume and with my open ear bone conduction headphones, of course. If you listen to the song though it's about taking a train but whatever, I've always associated it with Interstate highways.
I turned off and began following the old US 50 route again but then turned north and began following the old Spanish Trail that carried people, wagons and goods between Santa Fe and Southern California between 1800 and 1850, back when it was part of Mexico. Another national historic trail that I have picked up along the way.
The surface was great till I got to Cottonwood Wash road and it became much rougher and more hilly, curvy and very sandy in spots as it just kept crossing wash after wash. Since rain had moved through recently some rocks and debris had to be negotiated carefully when crossing. And the. I crossed at a very low spot where there was an enormous Cottonwood. I sat and ate a small snack here and got going because I knew the real heat was on the way. It was above 90 before 9am. But maybe I've gotten used to it because it didn't bother me as much today.
Soon though I turned back onto a properly maintained gravel road that I would follow the rest of the way into town. And once again I somehow worked it out to have an east wind to push me along. I'll take it.
I rode partway down Buckhorn Wash and saw some petroglyphs, a cave, and a preserved dinosaur print. I really wanted to ride further down to see more but I decided I needed to get going. Will be back one day for another visit for sure.
I got some Subway and fluids at Castle Dale. While I was inside a couple storms had gathered and combined to block the sun and cool things down. I was heading right for it but I guess it was moving away from me because it only rained lightly. I decided to veer off the route a bit to get off the highway and so I got to ride through a succession of tiny communities. Ultimately I decided to head up into the National Forest above the town of Ferron, off route, because I knew it would have a flowing creek. I also avoided more highway riding. I think I will climb up the rest of this canyon tomorrow and cut back across to my route up high. The place in the canyon I'm camping in is surrounded by sheer cliffs and the creek is rushing a safe distance below and away from me due to the downpour from earlier.
