This ride begins at Tillamook Bay Community College. Cape Meares is the first segment. Ride through town and get on 3rd Ave. Continue west (road becomes Netarts Highway). Cross a bridge and after 1/4 mile go right onto Bayocean Rd. This is a nice 5 mile stretch that parallels the Tillamook River to the bay and then toward the ocean. At mile 8.5 turn left onto Cape Meares Loop Rd. This road is closed to vehicles about 1 mile up the hill. This is a 2.2 mile climb and comes out at Cape Meares Park entrance. Opted to detour into the park to take some photos. However, this is 0.75 mile downhill to the parking area. It's a 150 foot climb back out.
The second segment is Cape Lookout. Continue on Cape Meares Loop Road, past Short Beach and another climb. After the climb it is 1/2 mile to the stop sign at Oceanside. Took another detour through town to the beach parking area. Turned around and continued on Netarts-Oceanside highway for yet another climb. This section goes into Netarts. At mile 17.3 turn right onto Netarts Bay Drive. This is another nice, flat section. Today there was a tailwind. Easily hitting 20-22 mph. At mile 18.8 go right onto Whiskey Creek Rd. This is a 5-mile section of short rollers to Cape Lookout Park entrance (mile 22.6). Rode into the park to the day use area for a quick snack and a couple more photos.
The third segment is "The Hill" to Sandlake Rd and finally to highway 101. After coming out of Cape Lookout Park, there is a daunting 2.75 mile climb, a lot of it at 7-9% grade. The summit is South Trail trailhead. Once the summit is attained, there is a 3.4 mile stretch of nearly all downhill to the Sandlake Rd. jct. Shortly after the junction the final long climb (1.2 miles) awaits. After the summit, it's another 2.8 miles to highway 101. Enjoyed a tailwind on this section as well.
The last segment finishes at the college. Go left onto highway 101 and ride 7.4 miles to the Tillamook River Rd turn-off (mile 41.4). There is plenty of shoulder. Be careful turning onto Tillamook River Road. The turn lane is on a curve. Ride Tillamook River Road 3.4 miles back into town. Finish by getting Highway 101 north for a block and then turning onto 11th St. After 1/4 mile go right onto 12th and complete the loop back to the college.
