I slept great despite the occasional roar from a big truck going by way up above me and the squeal of a train below me. It was in the thirties and I took my time in getting going. Pushing me and the bike up to the highway was a serious challenge. I was a good 150 feet below the highway and the last bit was difficult to gain traction but I did it. Since there was a litter bin(for tourists only, sign said) I used it to drop off my trash and resumed my route.
I rode by the little store in Moyie as I had plenty of food and it was cold enough that I didn't need much water, which was good since I had less than a liter left despite not cooking the night before.
The mountains and the lake were really amazing, as was all the scenery I rode through. I had a good shoulder and the traffic wasn't too bad. But I was glad to turn off onto a quick gravel shortcut north off the highway to Cranbrook through Hidden Valley. If felt weird to be riding through cattle grazing lands with cows in the road all of a sudden. I did some climbing and then roads undulated at gentle grades but with large holes and rocks to avoid. After only a few miles I spit out onto pavement and soon was in Cranbrook.
I stopped at the Rotary park in downtown which was a really nice and clean park, and there were actually a decent amount of people there using it. It had a brand new water fountain that featured my dream, a specially designed water bottle refill spout. I want to buy one of these and donate it to Cochran Mill. I took a pic of it because I liked it so much. Maybe we could have a volunteer day and get a bunch of us to install it ourselves? Just a thought.
I had helpfully routed my route right by the Safeway right after the park, and so I got some food and drink and used the Wifi to call and text family since my phone has no service here. Looked for prepaid cards but they didn't have any.
Continued on to another grocery store, and actually asked someone if they had any. In the US it seems like they're everywhere by each register no matter what store you go to. The person I talked to was really helpful and even pointed me in the direction of Walmart and something she called the Superstore.
I proceeded down some really crappy wide "Stroads" that fed the parking lots for all the big box stores but made it ok. Turns out the Superstore was kinda Canada's answer to Walmart, so I went in there. Actually found a sim card, bought it, and was all set to activate and install it there. But their wifi refused to work. I rolled across the gigantic parking lot to the Walmart and tried their Wifi from outside which has always worked great for me in the past. It wouldn't stay connected more than a few seconds. I gave up and just decided I was wasting too much time so I hit the road.
Or trail as it were, as I actually got to ride a really nice rail trail that took me up to the town of Kimberley. It was a lovely town and I wished I had the time to stop at the little downtown and eat a meal but instead I chose a gas station and a soda and a couple snacks. I then got going on the highway.
But this one was a lot less busy and still had a good shoulder. Plus it went gradually downhill to the Kootenay river where it joined back up with the main highway.
I stopped at the rest area on the river and marvelled at the tall mountain range right behind the river. Talked to a nice family from the Vancouver area making their way up to Calgary as well. Everyone is so nice here, really.
Today the wind shifted a bit from the northwest and I had a gradual uphill also to contend with my remaining 30 or so miles to Canal Flat. But they went by uneventfully and after a bit of searching on a gravel road in a wildlife management area, I settled on a spot behind a big rock and a scraggly juniper. Has a decent view of the lake and mountains behind.
