Scouted an out-and-back route following the Delaware River from Cooper River in Pennsauken to Crosswicks Creek in Bordentown (and crossing the Assiscunk Creek in Burlington).
Lots of interesting towns along the way; most have seen better days. Rust belt buildings and empty storefronts abound.
Burlington and Bordentown are pre-Revolution cities, with some fine old homes. Ben Franklin resided in Burlington before he moved to Philadelphia, and US Grant lodged his family there during the Civil War (the house still stands).
Bordentown was the home of "Common Sense" pamphleteer Thomas Paine. A Paine statue stands at the turnaround of my route, ~33 miles in, close to a view of Crosswicks Creek.
Nearly 10 miles of the route is on a nice new paved trail from Crystal Lake Park, linked by Old York Road with Kinkora Rail Trail (both part of the Delaware River Heritage Trail), making crossing US 130 much safer (twice each direction).
Got a late start for a longish ride, but made it back a bit before sunset. Beautiful gray November day, a bit cold at the start. For a time I thought I was under-dressed (hands and feet), but the notion passed when I got distracted.
Early on, I thought maybe my back tire was low, the going was so slow. But no...
Legs ached but no cramping thanks to Saltstick capsules.
All in all, a good Sunday on the bike, solo.
