Day 4 was the first wet day and by was it wet. As I left town I could scarcely see my route on my Garmin so heavy was the rain. At 4 miles in the town og Caldas da Rainha I spotted some murals of birds which were very realistic. I rode on but after 14 miles in Macarca I had to stop as the rain was so strong - I took shelter ... In a bus shelter for about 30 minutes hoping for it to go over ... It didn't, it just went from very heavy to heavy ! I pushed on and reached the coast at Nazare after 21 miles, a sweeping sandy bay with a huge cliff to the North of the town, the weather was still awful. There is a fenicular railway up the cliff and I rode that as I was allowed to put the bike on the front of the carriage which was pretty tricky with all the weight of the panniers. I headed inland to Marinha Grande and Leiria. The road out of Leiria was the IC2 bt as it ran parallel to the E1 motorway I expected it to be quiet - It was downright dangerous, there was a tiny verge and there were muliple huge wagons passing every few seconds, add to that the heavy rain & this was Dangerous. I had a thoroughly treacherous, scary and cold soaked 15 mile ride into town. I turned up at a pristine,marble & tiled Hotel entrance and left quite a fallout of debris from my soaked and dirty cycle gear. The hotel was really accommodating and helped me secure my bike and get all my filthy gear up to my room via another formally pristine lift ! The room had a great view across Pombal main square and I had a great view of a squall and huge hailstone storm which ensued.
