Another wet day and another 95 miles of up and down lumpy route which would follow the main motorway passing multiple times underneath huge viaducts as the motorway cut across all the inlets and valleys and my road meandered. The day started with uncertainty as the motorway was the only way across the estuary at Ribadeo, it looked like there was an accessible path across it but if not I would be adding an extra 15 miles to an already long day to cycle round the estuary. As I approached the bridge a small gap in a wire fence lead to a concrete path just wide enough for a bike which crossed the bridge behind the arm core barrier of the carriageways.
It was then a day of deja-vu constantly weaving inland at each coastal inlet beneath the motorway towering above on stilts before truning back underneath it to the coast. At about 60 miles near Soto del Barco I took shelter in a Garage with a cafe for some lunch before continuing the slog along the coast through Aviles before entering Gijon which had multiple local spellings but Xixon seemed the most common. The approach was very industrial passing coal heaps, chimneys and massive gas pipelines before emerging onto wide long avenuse leading into the city.
