Those wildflowers though. ๐๐๐
About a month or two ago, Zack of Gravel Bike California was coming up to the Bay Area from LA and asked for Peninsula gravel route suggestions. I offered some of my favorites, the one we did today being one of them. I was unable to join then and he didn't end up doing it either.
Fast forward to this weekend when he was going to be up again to do the Low Gap Grasshopper. He gave him some more suggestions but we settled on the most chill route to save his legs for the race tomorrow.
The weather was perfect and the scenery was really putting on a show with the early wildflower bloom. Even I was blown away by how extra beautiful this already beautiful ride was.
There was one section of trail at Pillar Point next to the bluff, close to the radar station, that was pretty beat up last time we went through. This time it was actually closed because there was a significant portion that had dropped about 4'. We ended up walking it.
On El Granada Beach, we saw a group training to catch animals on the beach. One guy was pretending to be a seal or something while another guy with a big net caught him. Then others with big wood sheets, kinda like riot shields surrounded and boxed him in. It was quite the sight. There was another group that was practicing with a cage/box.
When we got to Cowell-Purisima Coastal Trail, for some reason the gate was locked. There was a woman with her toddler on the other side. she said she hopped the fence and we could see plenty of other hikers so we went for it.
In fact, we saw so many people, I figured the gate was open at the other end but it was locked too, including the parking lot gate. Not sure why that was. Most of today, we saw very few bikes, which was strange. Tons of people walking though.
The wildflowers through that section were especially insane. We stopped for a lot of photos.
So that section was already really amazing and then I took them to Purisima Creek Redwoods and did an out-n-back there. Near the end, I sprinted ahead to get some shots. There were two kids on MTBs going the other way. Apparently the lead kid came around the corner, saw the guys and freaked out. He left a huge skid and fishtailed back and forth and finally hit Zack. Luckily everyone was okay.
We went to Dad's on the way back but they had ran out of bread and they were slowly grilling some. We waited for 10-15 minutes, which was there original estimate of how long it would take. When they said it was going to be another 10 minutes, we decided to go to Pizza Pie instead.
First time trying it. They were not bad. Not sure I totally love their topping choices, which made it hard to decide. Good crunch, I just wish it wasn't so sour.
Rather than repeat the same trails back, we just took Hwy 1 so we could get back faster.
