Day 1 Recap: That was a really long day (and night) in the saddle.
Temperature regulation was very difficult during the two night portions. I was either climbing and generating heat/sweat or descending and freezing. No combination of my layering worked very well.
Skyline Drive at night was surreal. No cars at all, but no wildlife either. Views were gorgeous under the almost full moon. Blue Ridge Parkway during the day (Saturday) was damn crowded with cars, but everyone was more respectful of a bicyclist than usual. Guess they all knew that I wasn't slowing them down in the slightest.
Saturday night was pretty brutal. Exhaustion from 20+ hours of riding and not sleeping Friday night caught up with me. Had to get off the bike and walk a minute every half hour or so. Wasn't my finest hours, but forward progress still accumulated.
The descent into Raphine and the overnight control was sketchy as hell and I knew I'd have to climb it in the morning which left me screaming expletives. Was too tired at the overnight to even buy dinner. Two packs of M&M's in the hotel vending machine had to suffice. Shower and bed were too important.
Day 2 Recap: Wow. Day two on tired legs is always an adventure.
There were three ridiculous climbs in the first thirty miles. I managed to make it up most of the first two, but the third was so over the top that I had to walk it. Oh well.
Rest of the day was following my breadcrumbs from Part 1 of this adventure. Parkway riding makes for great scenery and kinder drivers. Only one RV the whole day that was allergic to its brakes. :)
It's good to have this full ride behind me. I'm in no mood to do anything epic for a little while. At least not till the Randonesia kicks in and I forget the hard parts. Wonder if that will be three days or three months?
