Iain had led a group on a recce of this route earlier in the week. A couple had seen the error of their ways and decided not to join the second trip to the Full Moon at Little Kingshill. Alan and Noel however, were making the trip for the second time with Iain. Noel had also visited the Full Moon with me earlier in the week but by a different and less punishing route.
The ride started from Robertswood School on Chalfont Common, a few miles out of Uxbridge, in effect a devious way getting us all to start an hour earlier than the usual 10.00 am. Iain was joined by Alan, Cliff, Noel, Graham and Robert as we set off for a coffee and croissant stop in Chesham. Chris joined us at coffee as he hadn't heard about the unusual start point and was waiting in Uxbridge.
From Chesham the ride turned north out of Pednor Bottom along Chartridge and Arrewig Lanes towards St Leonards - fabulous countryside, really quiet lanes with hardly a car in sight with a few hills to help beat the cold. We then doubled back towards the Lee, passing the Old Swan and going through Wendover Dean towards Prestwood. Little Kingshill was reached via a short cut along a farm track that would be lovely in June. The group slipped and slid in all directions but all managed to stay on the bikes (apart from Cliff who took the alternative route and headed for home). It was about this point where I began to think that more notice should have been taken of the morning's weather forecast as the predicted heavy rain arrived in support of the rapidly dropping temperature.
Extra layers were donned (by those who had them) as we waited, shivering a bit, for our lunch in the Full Moon's marquee. Over lunch Iain took an executive decision to abandon the rest of his scenic route and head the quick way to Amersham with the option of a train for those who wanted it. Most continued to get wet as they rode towards home. A great ride, in good company, look forward to riding it again - in summer.
